Efflorescence

What causes efflorescence?

Efflorescence is not a cause but a consequence of the damp problem. Rising damp and damp walls do contain not only water but also many salts that are hydroscopic. This means that the salts that are present and come to the surface of brickwork or rendering and on cellar walls, draw damp from the environment and cause areas of black dots and other phenomena. Even after treating a wall against rising damp and damp patches efflorescence can still occur.

The only remedy for efflorescence is to treat the wall with a specialist rendering system. This restoration render does not remove the cause of the efflorescence but buffers the salts for a considerable period, depending on the amount of salt present. The restoration rendering system can only be finished with a permeable paint system.
